People think of the Klondike Gold Rush when they think of the Yukon, and after that, the gold mines in general. However, the Yukon is actually also a place full of copper deposits. From the early 1900s through the 1980s, Whitehorse was a copper mining city. In fact, at one point, it became one of the largest cities in Canada (by land area) because if its expansion to get tax revenue from the copper mines.
On June 10th, with a friend from out-of-town in tow, we took a trip down to one of the old pits. As a geotechnical engineer, I maybe should know better, but hey… here are some pictures. If you do visit any of the pits, it’s at your own risk (the many, many signs you pass on your way make it abundantly clear)
