As part of our trip package to McCarthy/Kennecott/Kennicott, the donor included a flightseeing tour in his own plane. He’s a geologist who is very familiar with the area, and knowing this, made the trip extra special to me. This is mostly just going to be a photo essay, so enjoy!

Kayla and I hiked the Root Glacier trail to start one of our days in Kennecott. The trail is maintained by the National Parks Service, who have excellent resources related to it here and here. Clocking in at about 6.5 km (4 miles) round-trip, it’s a pretty easy hike. The Continue Reading

The Kennecott Mines are a National Historic Landmark. The mines, which ran from the early 1910s to the late 1930s, stayed pretty well preserved until it was taken over by the Parks service. It is in a state of “arrested decay,” meaning that they’re working to keep it in its Continue Reading
