When I woke up to feed the cat, I was pleasantly surprised to see some aurora outside!

We wanted to take advantage of a super clear day and make the drive down to Skagway. A clear day in the White Pass is always worth the drive, even if it’s cold and cloudy!

After stopping at Bennett Lake and Caribou Crossing Coffee in Carcross, we took a drive down the South Klondike. The road was in excellent shape, with the tire tracks clear or at least scarified for good grip. Our second stop was at Tutshi Lake to stretch our legs.

Next up, continuing the drive into the White Pass. At this time of year, a lot of the usual pull-offs are full of snow, so we pulled out where we could. We grabbed an amazing view of the Sawtooth Range.

We continued our march down to Skagway, stopping in a few places as the pullouts allowed.

In Skagway, we took a walk by the ocean. Normally when we’re here, the docks are full of cruise ships. Visiting in the winter: no such issue!

The wind was so strong, so we didn’t stay too long. We went down to the waterfalls behind the Gold Rush cemetery and came across some locals hanging out with their dogs. They all looked to be having fun. we chatted for a brief moment, then headed back home.

We stopped a few times on the way back to take in the view.

We saw some caribou along the highway on our way home between Carcross and Whitehorse. It’s the first time this winter we’d seen them!
