Flightseeing in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park

As part of our trip package to McCarthy/Kennecott/Kennicott, the donor included a flightseeing tour in his own plane. He’s a geologist who is very familiar with the area, and knowing this, made the trip extra special to me. This is mostly just going to be a photo essay, so enjoy!

The mill and townsite, seen shortly after takeoff. The glacier is in the foreground.
Looking at the mountains on the western side of the glacier as we fly up.
The view of the glacier and one of the many icefalls on the massif
A detail shot of the glacier. The little pools are always so interesting to me.
You can see all the debris on the glacier on the sides of the valley from where it’s plucked material from the surrounding mountains.
Flying close to one of the ice falls. It’s very overbearing when you’re so close to it.
More of an overview of one of the ice falls.
So many glaciers!!
Lush green forest and alpine areas just to the sides of the glacier. It’s a huge contrast
A rock glacier up in the mountains. Notice the old mine workings! This is the Jumbo Mine.
The Bonanza Mine workings. Ore would have been sent down from here to the mill via tramway.
A stunning peak as we head eastward, with the Chugach Mountains in the distance.
Animals!!
One last look at the glacier as we head back to land again.
