Kayla was back in Ontario for work travel, and I was tired of being fogged in at home in Whitehorse. I saw that the clouds might be gone in the westerly direction, and that was all it took! I left Whitehorse in the morning and punched out of the fog by the time I was just past the thaw slump. My first stop of the morning to catch some light was at the Takhini River along the Kusawa Lake Road. The river hadn’t quite frozen yet, but there were sheets of ice flowing down the river.

I was hoping for a great stop in Haines Junction to grab a shot of the Auriol Range on my way through, but just like Whitehorse, it was socked in with fog from the river. I got out of it just a few kilometres past, and pulled out into a rest stop to grab a picture and take it in. The highway was dead quiet, but beautiful.

I continued along my way, with a couple more roadside stops to enjoy breaks in the fog before reaching Kluane Lake. The lake is one of my favourite places on the planet, and it did not disappoint. It still was not frozen over, and there was only a small amount of fast ice along the shore. Unlike Whitehorse and Haines Junction, however, the fog was not engulfing everything in its way.

The beach was still, and oh so quiet, and the sun hitting the mountains in the most spectacular way!

I love the light blue light that mountain valleys get on a clear and sunny day when you’re in the shade. The photo next was taken from the (closed in the winter) visitor’s centre parking lot.

For anyone familiar with the Alaska Highway, you’ll know just past the visitor’s centre there is a sign which warns of potential sheep on the road. I’ve driven past it probably close to a dozen times and never seen them near the road, but this time I lucked out! Four of them just minding their own business.

I continued on my journey, stopping to strech my legs at Soldier’s Summit. The entire area shaded in blue, with the distant mountains getting hit by sun.

I made my way out to Destruction Bay when the fog grew thick again. I took this as a hint to stop and grab a meal before heading back home. The fog had lifted by the time I passed through Haines Junction again, and so I took a quick stop at the Dezadeash River to stretch my legs again.
