Christmastime trip to Atlin, BC

December was a busy month, with us travelling to Alberta for my company’s AGM and annual party. We fit in some time visiting family and friends on either end as well. While it was cold in Alberta, it was colder in the Yukon, so we were looking for pretty places to go where we could do something inside. At this time of year, most seasonal businesses are shut, but Kershaw’s Cafe in Atlin opens up again in December, all decked out in holiday cheer!

The drive from Whitehorse was quite uneventful, we didn’t make a stop on the way. Not only was it cold (-35 to -40ish), but there was also ice fog over some of the lakes which still had open water, including Little Atlin Lake and Atlin Lake itself. While it was too foggy to see the mountains in Atlin, the decorations at Kershaw’s more than made up for it!

I’m absolutely not kidding when I say it was dressed up like something you’d see in a Hallmark movie. he owner Amelie goes all out, making a lot of it by hand.

Looking back towards the lake:

Kayla and I had our lattes and split a tortiere and pair of baked goods. The food here is always to die for; it’s freshly made each morning, absolutely delicious, and gorgeous all at once. We spent the afternoon sipping our drinks (and getting more) and playing cards, watching as people came in and out of the busy cafe. I cannot recommend this place enough, no matter the season. It is always worth a stop when you’re in Atlin!

When it was time to start the drive back, Amelie offered to take our pictures and we had a great chat about how much we’ve loved living in the north and visiting Atlin so frequently. As we left at about 2:45 (Yukon Time), the sun was already thinking about setting. We stopped in a pullout overlooking Minto Mountain, with the sun behind it and sundogs on either side. Truly a magical moment in an already amazing day.
