Hiking the Sam McGee Trail

This weekend has been a busy one for us! On Friday, we took a hike up Fish Mountain, meeting some people along the way. We talked to a local, who had just moved back to the Territory, and Dominique passing through in her van, who would be spending most of her summer in the North (her handle is @shewandersearth – worth a follow!)

On Saturday, Kayla and I were busy unpacking all of our belongings, which finally arrived. 40 kilos of cardboard later, we’re finally all settled in here.

On Sunday, we decided to push ourselves and hike the Sam McGee Trail. While Whitehorse was smoky, the Carcross area appeared to be relatively clear. The day was shaping up to be a hot one – so we hit the road early and were on our way up by 9:30AM.

The first stretch of the trail is solidly within the woods, with small mountain and lake views tempting you through the trees.

Mining history is evident along the trail with the tramways and cables crossing the path every so often. At the end of the official Alltrails portion, we reached the picturesque tramway station. This was after about 650 m of elevation gain.

Alongside the tram station are some of the old ore carriers. I grabbed this shot of one with the mountains in the background.

We weren’t ready to turn back yet, instead following more of the towers up to a saddle. Here is a view looking down along the line of towers:

This spot was the perfect place for Kayla and I to have lunch – our patent grilled cheese!

Behind us was the main portion of Montana Mountain. While I would have loved to explore more, my legs were telling us that we may need more training before trying to tackle that.

Before heading down the mountain, I set up my phone on a rock to get a good photo of both of Kayla and I.

The hike up and down was extremely hot. After finishing the hike, we stopped at the beach in Carcross for a swim – super refreshing!

After catching some rays, we headed home, and were in the front door by 6PM.
