Riding the White Pass & Yukon Route to the Summit

My in-laws were in town for over a week and a half and hoping to see the sights. We looked at the smoke forecast on the 14th, and Skagway seemed to be our best chance. This turned out to be a great decision!

After a brief stop in Carcross, we made our way through the White Pass. This included a quick stop at “Outhouse Hill.”

Snow still abound at Outhouse Hill along the White Pass Summit

While in town, we bought tickets to go on the train up to the summit. While we had originally hoped to take the 1:00, there were not enough tickets, and so instead we took one a couple hours later. This turned out to be a good delay. We had time to wander Skagway and ensured a train trip which wasn’t crammed. First, here is a scene through the window along the climb up.

Next, just before the summit, you can see part of “the trail of 98” – where the stampeders wore down the trail, still visible with discarded equipment.

I went out onto the deck once we reached the summit. While it was slightly brisk, it was worth it for the enhanced views! Here we are going past a small lake in the turn-around loop.

Up next we went past Summit Lake, with some rotting ice still present.

The forest fire haze began filling the valley on our descent.

I grabbed this shot of the view of the track above us. If you look closely, you can see another train following us down the mountain!

Finally, after getting off the train, I grabbed a shot of the engine. This is one of WP&YR’s newer locomotives, painted in the black and red colour scheme.
