Montana Mountain is one of the most visually stunning pieces of scenery as you drive the South Klondike Highway towards Carcross. After saying “we should go up there” for the past year, we finally made plans. We read the Yukon Hiking description and went on our way. The washout that is noted quite truly is the end of the road. Even a quad would have difficulty getting past that point! Once you walk past that however, the trail remains easy for quite some time.
As we walked along the road, we found more views of Bennett Lake.
Heeding the advice of other hikers, we took the ATV trail up the mountain instead of walking across the old landslide. While the pictures I have seen of it don’t look too bad, Kayla preferred to stick on stable ground so we didn’t even walk up to it. It’s a little steeper of a route getting on top of the hill and it needs you to pay attention. The views open up quicker though!
We continued our way along the trail. If the prior photos weren’t enough foreshadowing, we had to turn around because of some snow still packed on the trail. Instead of going back the exact way we came, we decided to cut down the hill to an old hut and some mine workings.
In the early 1900s following the Klondike Gold Rush, some silver deposits were mined in various phases. Murray Lundberg’s blog has a great history if some of these old mines.
The way back was easy, and we made it back to our car pretty quick.
